I am making a diaper cake, I use receiving blankets around the diaper tiers, how can i hold them together in?

the back of the cake? I also use ribbon on top of the receiving blankets and don't know how to get that to stay either. I have used hot glue in the past, but that really ruins the items. I tried sticky dots and they did not hold. I then used nice stick pins with the pearl looking head on the end, but I would hate for the mom to stick herself! Help?!
