Are indirect object pronouns necessary in spanish?

"John le dio la pelota a Juan" is the correct one. I honestly don't know how to explain it to you as I'm a native Spanish speaker and I do it out of instinct, it's not something I think about when writing :S I guess that happens with all mother tongues.
