Dio in Last Exile? What happened? (SPOILERS)?

Did he die? I saw him fall off his ship, but he is heard saying "ascending" like usual on the other ship. Not to mention, some interview or another talks about him being picked up by a ship as he starts to fall. I'd like to believe he lived, but want to make sure lol. Anyone else think what I think?
