What are some useful (and legal) plants to grow in Michigan?

I don't like a lot of flowers. I enjoy growing plants i can use, I prefer things like herbs, edible plants, and the such. I'm particularly interested in plants that have medicinal uses. are there any particularly interesting or useful plants that you can suggest? all the research i've done has yielded some interesting plants but either I have no clue as to where I'd even begin to look for the seeds, or they wouldn't survive here for one reason or another. as I said, please suggest only legal plants, i asked on a few forums and all anyone ever mentions is cannabis
