My e-mail spell check doesn't work?

When I try to send an e-mail, I have no ribbon on the spell-check row. I have no font, color, etc. When I hit BBC I have to enter every e-mail address from memory. How can I get this back to normal? When I try to write a letter and can't use the function keys to check or send e-mail to all of my friends.
